MEDICINE AND DUTY
THE FIRST WORLD WAR DIARY OF DR HAROLD DEARDEN. 128pp, 60 black and white images. Softback.
FOREWARD BY PAUL ATTERBURY.
Harold Dearden's diaries were first published in 1928. This was a sanitised version - the names, places and much detail had been omitted. A century later with access to the original diaries, we felt it permissible to reinstate these names, places, gossip and personal impressions. Contemporary accounts of a personal nature are rare and invaluable. We have included photographs and maps to explain and illustrate the infrastructure and introducted many of the personalities.
His two years in France illustrate the extraordinary contrasts in his life. His first posting was to No 5 British Red Cross Hospital in Wimereux and as the Medical Officer of the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards in the Third Battle of Ypres and the advance of Cambrai in 1917.
